Maycember is real

Maycember [mey-SEM-ber]
noun, informal, humorous

Definition:
A portmanteau of May and December, Maycember refers to the whirlwind of events, obligations, and celebrations that crowd the month of May, making it feel as hectic and overwhelming as the holiday season in December—but without the gifts and instead, seasonal allergies.

For families, Maycember is marked by an explosion of activities such as birthday parties, school recitals, graduations, spring concerts, First Communions, Mother's Day, sports practices and tournaments, parent-teacher meetings, and other year-end school events. For professionals, it’s a nonstop stretch of industry conferences, galas, fundraisers, and networking obligations.

The chaos stems from the collective rush to wrap up everything before the unofficial start of summer, aka, Memorial Day weekend.

Example:
"I thought December was bad, but this Maycember schedule has me triple-booked every weekend!"

Thoughts:
These musings may not be profound, but at least they're short and sweet. Here's what's been on repeat in my mind:

  • One day at a time. If I think about what my son will wear for "Dress Like an Animal Day" while attending the Spring Concert, I'll go nuts. Bite-sized pieces are much more digestible.

  • The only way around is through. I'm sure I'm not the only one tempted to put my head in the sand to avoid some of this all, but that always backfires. Time to face it head on.

  • These are the good old days. When I'm older and grayer, I will miss this season of my life. That perspective is a gamechanger for me. (And for the sports parents out there, you know why I almost inadvertently capitalized GameChanger in honor of the app running our lives....!)

  • Let's rise and thrive! Some days I feel like I've barely survived, but I'm gently reminding myself that I'm in charge of whether I thrive. Bring it!
